Men’s Soccer Edged in Penalty Kick in Season Opener

MADISON, N.J. – FDU-Florham scored on a penalty kick in the 68th minute and the host Devils edged the Rangers 1-0 in the first round of the Drew/FDU Fall Festival at FDU's Robert T. Shields on Friday.

The Devils will now face Kean University, a 2-0 winner of Hunter College, in the tournament championship match on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Drew. The Rangers will face Hunter at 3:30 p.m. in the consolation match.

In a scoreless first half, FDU held a 7-6 shot advantage but Drew goalie David Hoyt stopped the Devils' only shot on goal.

The Rangers outshot the FDU 10-6 in the second half, and Hoyt collected two more saves. But Irfan Karmalli converted the game-winning goal after a teammate was fouled inside the penalty area.

Anthony Petrucci made seven saves to earn a shutout for the Devils.

Eight different Rangers attempted a shot for the game, with junior James Cahill leading the way with five.
