NEW YORK – The Drew University women's volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit and defeat Saint Joseph's Long Island 3-2 in its season opener at the NYU Invitational on Friday.
The win also gave first-year Head Coach
Amanda Rachwal her first collegiate coaching victory.
The Rangers dropped the opening two sets 25-17 and 25-7 before rallying to win the final three games, 25-22, 25-22, and 15-13.
Junior
Teeya Desgoutte paced the Rangers with 14 kills, a career-high 25 digs, and four blocks while classmate
Emily Shirk added a career-high 14 kills to go with 11 digs. Junior
Marissa Guajardo came within two aces of a triple-double, finishing with 11 kills, a career-high eight aces – a mark that ranks second in school history – and 12 digs. Sophomore
Alyssa Rachwal contributed 42 assists and 14 digs, and freshman
Aidyn Stone scooped 22 digs. Senior
Genevieve Sarinelli chipped in with 14 digs.
With the final set tied 13-13, Desgoutte threw down a kill before Guajardo clinched the match with her final ace. Only
Lauren Gaza has served up more aces in a match after notching 10 versus Wilkes last season.
The second and final day of the NYU Tournament will be held in Baldwin Gym, with a quadrupleheader starting at 10 a.m. The Rangers will play the final two matches of the day, taking on UMass-Boston at 3 p.m. and No. 6 NYU at 5:30 p.m.
