MADISON, N.J. – Junior
Emily Shirk threw down the match-clinching kill and the Drew University women's volleyball team earned a thrilling 3-2 victory over Manhattanville University to cap a tri-match in Baldwin Gym on Saturday.
The Rangers captured the marathon match, which lasted two hours and 14 minutes, by scores of 27-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-25, 16-14.
In its opening match of the day, Drew lost to Hunter College by a final of 3-1 (25-14, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21).
Against Manhattanville, junior
Teeya Desgoutte led the Rangers with 15 kills and 17 digs while Shirk totaled 10 kills and 18 digs. The Blue and Green racked up 12 blocks – the fourth-most in team history – with senior
Alyssa Baron leading the way with a career-high nine rejections, a mark that is tied for second all-time at Drew and just two shy of the school record.
Sophomore
Alyssa Rachwal added 40 assists and seven service aces, the latter of which also ties for the second-most in team history. Junior
Inaya Stanford contributed nine kills and 10 digs.
In the final set, the Valiants jumped to a 4-1 lead, but the Rangers stormed back with a 8-2 run to assume a 9-6 lead. Baron had a hand in the final three points of the surge, teaming with Shirk on a block before firing consecutive kills.
Manhattanville tied it at 9-9 with a 3-0 spurt before Drew answered with a 3-0 run of its own and would not trail again. The Valiants came all the way back to tie it at 14-all, but that's when the Rangers put the match away on kills from junior
Abigail Pereira and Shirk.
Versus Hunter, Desgoutte also led the way with 16 kills and nine digs while Baron had another big defensive outing with seven blocks. Shirk notched seven kills and 14 digs while Rachwal accumulated 30 assists and 19 digs. Senior
Genevieve Sarinelli posted scooped 18 digs.
The Rangers return to action on Tuesday, when they visit Montclair State University at 7 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
