Balanced Effort Lifts Field Hockey Over WestConn

MADISON, N.J. – Three different Rangers scored a goal and the Drew University field hockey team defeated Western Connecticut State University 3-0 in a non-conference affair Wednesday evening in Ranger Stadium.

Drew (6-3) scored once in the opening half, then added one insurance goal in each of the last two quarters.

Senior Janelle Arch notched one goal and one assist for the Rangers while senior Tyler Olivio and sophomore Chandler Straub tallied one goal apiece. Sophomore Beth Kelly made a pair of saves to register her second shutout of the season.

Olivio put the Rangers on the scoreboard with 10:25 left in the opening quarter, when she slotted a shot through traffic from the right side for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Drew outshot the Wolves 11-1 in the first half, but Jaden Kilmer made eight saves through the first two quarters for WestConn.

In the opening minutes of the third quarter, Arch put the Rangers up 2-0. Sophomore Emma Rider blasted a shot off the goalie's pads, and Arch quickly pushed the ball into the cage for her fifth tally of the year.

Drew put it out of reach with 11:21 left in the game. Arch dribbled in front of the goalie before dishing a pass off to Straub, who from the left post drilled in her first collegiate goal.

The Rangers finished with an 18-2 shot advantage. Kilmer finished the game with 11 saves.

Drew continues its season on Saturday, when it hosts Juniata College in a Landmark Conference affair starting at noon.
