Field Hockey Edged by Juniata in Shootout

MADISON, N.J. – Eighty minutes weren't enough time to decide a winner between the Drew University field hockey team and Juniata College on Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.

The two sides went to overtime tied 1-1 and neither side was able to find the back of the cage in either of the 10-minute overtime periods. After the teams tied 2-2 in a best-of-five round, the Eagles prevailed on their second attempt in a sudden victory round.

Drew was competing in its first shootout since a 3-2 loss to Russell Sage College on Oct. 26, 2018.

After a scoreless first quarter, Juniata (2-5, 1-1) took a 1-0 lead with 3:25 left in the opening half, with Tess Ledeboer scoring off a penalty corner. The Eagles carried their one-goal lead into the intermission despite the Rangers holding a 7-3 shot advantage over the first 30 minutes.

Drew answered with 4:36 to go in the third quarter, when freshman Emily Caporrino connected off a pass from sophomore Emma Rider for her second goal of the season.

Both sides had ample scoring opportunities the rest of the way, including the fourth quarter, when Drew outshot Juniata 6-3.

Juniata outshot the Rangers 7-1 in the first overtime, when four players come off the field for a 7-on-7 match-up. However, sophomore Beth Kelly stood tall, making five of her nine saves in the period.  The Eagles held a slight 3-2 shot advantage in the second OT, when Kelly made her final save of the game.

In the set of five shootout, the Eagles led 1-0 before senior Tyler Olivio tied it up for Drew on the team's second attempt. The Eagles went in front 2-1 when sophomore Brooke Carlisle kept the Rangers in it, cashing in on Drew's fifth and final shot.

Both sides missed their first attempt in the sudden-death round before Juniata's Sydney Witter clinched it for the Eagles.

The Rangers finished with advantages in shots (19-16) and corners (13-7). Amanda Puza made five saves for Juniata.

Drew continues its season next Saturday, when it hosts Elizabethtown College in another Landmark Conference tilt starting at noon.
