HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Juniata College scored in the seventh minute and the Eagles handed the Drew University men's soccer team a 1-0 setback in both teams' Landmark Conference opener Saturday afternoon.
Shawn Tanaka provided all the offense the hosts would need when he took a long pass from the defensive third, made one touch just inside the box and slotted a shot inside the left post.
Juniata (5-1-4, 1-0) outshot the Rangers 10-6, but graduate student
David Hoyt made four saves for the Rangers (5-3-2, 0-1). Maxwell Mattioni stopped three shots to earn the shutout for the Eagles, who earned their first win in 17 tries versus Drew.
Tanaka's goal was also the first shot of the day for either team. Hoyt kept the Rangers to within a goal when he made three saves in the first half.
The Eagles did not yield a shot until the 44th minute, when Mattioni turned aside a shot from senior
Tino Puentes. Juniata finished with an 8-1 shot advantage in the opening period.
Drew turned up the offensive pressure in the second half, when it outshot the Eagles 5-2. The Rangers received a golden opportunity to pull even in the 56th minute, but a penalty kick from junior
James Cahill was saved by Mattioni, who went on to make his final stop in the 73rd minute on a shot from junior
Jonathan Gutierrez.
The Rangers continue their season on Tuesday, when they visit Immaculata University in a non-conference affair starting at 7 p.m.
