HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Juniata College scored in the 67th minute and the host Eagles edged the Drew University women's soccer team 1-0 in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers (3-4-2, 0-1) held a 9-8 edge in shots, but Sarah Betts made three saves in goal for the Eagles (7-1-1, 1-0), who won their seventh game in a row.
Sophomore
Sarah Crowley also turned aside three shots for Drew.
Neither team scored in the first half, when the Rangers outshot Juniata 4-2. The Eagles placed the only shot on frame in the opening period, however, when Crowley made her first save of the game in the 14th minute.
The offense opened up slightly for each team in the second period, when Juniata outshot the Rangers 6-5. Betts stopped a shot from freshman
Kristina Lowe in the 56th minute before Crowley denied Daniela Scipioni on a header in the 64th minute. Crowley stopped one more shot on a blast from Gracie French in the 67th minute, but French rebounded in her own shot to put her team on top.
Betts collected two more saves down the stretch on shots from freshman
Lillian Hedrick in the 73rd minute and graduate student
Maggie Speckhart in the 86th minute.
The Rangers return to action on Tuesday, when they visit Delaware Valley University in a non-conference affair starting at 7 p.m.
