MADISON, N.J. – Senior
Janelle Arch scored three goals for her first career hat trick and the Drew University field hockey team defeated Manhattanville 5-0 in its home opener Wednesday afternoon at Ranger Stadium.
Â
The Rangers, who improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2013, led 2-0 at the half before Arch took over, netting Drew's final three tallies.
Â
It was the second straight home game for the Rangers that featured a hat trick, as senior
Tyler Olivio also scored three goals in Drew's 6-3 Landmark Conference win over Lycoming in the team's final home game last season.
Â
Olivio added one goal and one assist for the Rangers.
Â
The Blue and Green wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Olivio struck just 1:25 into the game on a breakaway down the right side of the field. Then with 3:42 left in the opening period, senior
Lauren Cagliostro drilled in a penalty-stroke goal to give the hosts their early 2-0 advantage.
Â
Neither side scored in the second quarter, but the Rangers needed just over a minute to strike again in the third period, when Arch knocked in a cross from Olivio on the left post. Then with 2:04 left in the quarter, sophomore
Emma Rider sent a pass up to Arch in the right side of the circle, where slotted in a shot past the keeper for her second tally of the game to make it a 4-0 game heading into the final period.
Â
Arch reached her milestone just 2:09 into the final quarter, taking a pass from the top and working around several defenders before firing a shot inside the left post.
Â
Sophomore goalie
Beth Kelly, the reigning Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Week, earned her first collegiate shutout.
Â
Cat Morgan made 10 saves for the Valiants (0-2).
Â
The Rangers continue their three-game homestand on Saturday, when they take on Neumann University at 11 a.m. in another non-conference outing.
