Armuth Earns 400th Victory With Win Over WestConn

MADISON, N.J. – Drew University Men's Soccer Head Coach Lenny Armuth recorded his 400th career victory on Wednesday evening with his team's 1-0 non-conference win over Western Connecticut University in Ranger Stadium.

Senior Tino Puentes scored the game-winning goal in the 24th minute for Drew (2-1) while graduate student David Hoyt registered four saves to earn the shutout.

Armuth, who is in his 31st season at the helm of the Rangers, becomes just the seventh active NCAA Division III men's soccer coach to reach the milestone and his just the 24th D3 men's soccer coach to ever hit the mark. He has now amassed a tremendous career record of 400-148-57, good for a .708 winning percentage.

Puentes controlled a pass from junior Jonathan Gutierrez and from the top of the box and chipped a shot over the WestConn keeper for his first goal of the season and all of the offense the Rangers would need.

Drew outshot the Wolves 10-6 in the first half, but Justin Rivest made six saves for the Wolves to keep it a one-goal game at the intermission.

Hoyt came up a pair of big saves in the opening half. He corralled a header off a free kick in the sixth minute, then made a diving stop off a booming strike from the outside in the 43rd minute. But perhaps his biggest play came in the 70th minute, when he hit the turf again to smother a header from point-blank range on another WestConn free kick. The Rangers did not yield another shot on frame the rest of the way.

The Rangers finished with an 18-11 advantage in shots while both sides earned five corner kicks. The Wolves were called for three more fouls (18-15) than the Rangers while the two sides combined for nine yellow cards.

Drew continues its season on Saturday, when it visits Saint Joseph's Long Island at 2 p.m. in another non-conference tilt.
