Rangers Pull Away in Second Half to Down Susquehanna

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's soccer team pulled away in the second half and the Rangers earned their first Landmark Conference victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Susquehanna University at a wet Ranger Stadium on Saturday.

With the score tied 1-1 at halftime, Drew (7-3-2, 1-2-1 LC) went in front to stay on a spectacular goal from junior Andrew Dunne in the 66th minute. Taking a corner kick from the left side, Dunne bounced an inswinger through the box and into the right side of the net for his second career goal and what held up as this first career game-winner.

Five minutes later, Dunne sent in another corner kick from the same spot that helped set up an insurance goal. This time, his offering was headed out of the air and bounced inside the left post by senior Ryan Fischer for his second goal of the season.

For the game, the Rangers outshot Susquehanna 21-5. Finn Kramer made seven saves for the River Hawks (4-7-2, 0-2-2 LC) while junior Donovan Friedhoff stopped one shot for Drew.

Drew struck first on a rebound from sophomore Turkcan Curak in the 41st minute. Senior James Cahill created the offense when he picked off a pass in the attacking zone and blasted a left-footer from the top of the box that was knocked down by Kramer. Curak followed up, drilling the loose ball off one bounce and into the upper-left side of the net.

Susquehanna responded quickly, as Owen Kaar scored in the 42nd minute on a curling free kick that deflected off the hand of off a diving Friedhoff and inside the right post, evening the score at 1-1.

The Rangers return home on Tuesday, when they take on Wilkes University at 7 p.m. in another Landmark Conference affair.
