MADISON, N.J. – Freshman
Bella Fini scored a pair of goals and the Drew University field hockey team picked up a big 2-0 Landmark Conference victory over Wilkes University Wednesday evening in Ranger Stadium.
The Rangers (12-2, 4-1 LC) entered the night tied with Wilkes and Susquehanna University for second place in the conference standings, but now share second place only with the River Hawks.
Drew outshot the Colonels 19-8 and yielded only two shots on goal, both of which were saved by junior
Beth Kelly, who earned her third shutout of the season.
The Rangers, who improved to 5-0 at home this season, have now posted their best record through 14 games since the 2013 squad was also 12-2.
The two sides nearly played to a scoreless draw in the first half. Drew outshot Wilkes 6-0 in the first quarter, but Chloe Gilroy made four of her 10 saves in the period.
The Rangers averted danger in the second quarter when a penalty stroke from Lydia Keppel clanged off the right post with 7:30 on the clock.
Gilroy also stopped four shots in the second quarter before the Rangers finally broke through with 23 seconds left in the half. On a scrum in front, senior
Emily Monaco flipped a pass over Gilroy, who was on the ground. With just a defender to beat, Fini blistered the ball off one hop and into the cage for all of the offense the Rangers would need.
Drew stuck quickly in the third quarter, doubling its lead just 1:44 into the period. Junior
Emma Rider stepped in front of an errant Wilkes clear, dribbled inside the top of the arc and delivered a pass to sophomore
Emily Caporrino on the right side. Caporrino pushed a shot through the keeper, and it was tipped in by a diving Fini, who notched her 13th goal of the season and her third multi-goal game of the year.
The Rangers continue their Landmark Conference schedule on Saturday, when they host Catholic University at noon.
