WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Led by sophomore
Josephine Nguyen's individual victory, the Drew University women's golf squad won the team title at The Melee, held Sunday and Monday at Ford's Colony Country Club.
The Rangers fired a 671 (342-329) to edge out both Pfeiffer and Shenandoah by a single stroke. Averett (684) and Salisbury (692) rounded out the top-five and were followed by Bridgewater (Va.) (701), Virginia Wesleyan "B" (731), and Kean (763).
Nguyen earned her first victory of the season and the seventh of her career by firing a 147 (77-70) and notching four birdies in each round. She tied Pfeiffer's Kirstyn Page for first place but won by virtue of the first tiebreaker – card comparison of the second round, in which Nguyen shot a 70 and Page carded a 75. Nguyen's second-round score was the second-lowest of her career behind only her 68 shot on the second day of the same tournament last season.
Senior
Roxy Riles was Drew's second finisher, tying for seventh in the field of 42 with a 166 (79-87). She opened the tournament with a pair of birdies on Sunday and shot even-par on 17 holes for the weekend.
Junior
Dabin Lee and sophomore
Isabella Borte were also in action and finished just two strokes apart. Lee placed 22nd with a 178 (96-82), posting a career-low by four strokes, and parred 14 holes for the tournament. Borte tied for 23rd with a 180 (90-90), posting a birdie on Sunday and 10 for the event.
The Rangers conclude their fall season on Saturday and Sunday at the Landmark Conference Fall Preview, held at Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort in Shawnee on Delaware, Pa.
