Men’s Soccer Blanks Goucher, Advances to Landmark Semifinals

TOWSON, Md. – Senior James Cahill and freshman Matt Munoz scored one goal apiece while junior Donovan Friedhoff made five saves and the No. 5-seeded Drew University men's soccer team downed No. 4 seed Goucher College 2-0 in the first round of the Landmark Conference Championship tournament on Saturday.

With the win, the Rangers (11-5-2) advance to the tournament semifinals for the second time in the last three years and will visit top-seeded University of Scranton on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

In the first-ever postseason meeting between the two sides, Cahill gave the Rangers all of the offense they would need when he slotted in a penalty-kick goal in the fifth minute. It was his third goal of the season and the second career PK tally.

Drew outshot the Gophers 9-1 in the opening half, but Goucher keeper Ale Sternini made five of his six saves in the period and the Rangers took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

It was a back-and-forth affair in the second half, when each side attempted seven shots. But Friedhoff kept the Gophers (9-7-3) off the scoreboard, collecting four of his stops in the period.

Munoz clinched the victory for the Rangers in the 89th minute. Junior Declan Marcilla Ryan rolled a well-placed a through ball from midfield and Munoz outraced a defender to the left side of the box, where he drilled a shot into the far post for his fourth goal of the season.
