Catholic Edges Rangers in Landmark Conference Final

WASHINGTON – The Drew University men's soccer team battled Catholic University to a standstill for 84 minutes, but the host Cardinals broke through in the 85th minute and edged the Rangers 1-0 in the Landmark Conference championship match Saturday afternoon.

One game after setting a career-high with eight saves, junior Donovan Friedhoff established a new career-best with nine stops for the fifth-seeded Rangers, who close out the season with a record of 11-6-3.

The win gave second-seeded Catholic (13-0-6) its third straight Landmark Conference title. The Cardinals, who remain undefeated on the season, receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Championship tournament.

In the opening half, Catholic outshot the Rangers 7-1, but Friedhoff stopped a pair of shots to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard. Senior Chris Chyzowych placed a shot on goal for Drew in the 15th minute but had it saved by Owen Allegro.

The hosts turned up the pressure in the second half, outshooting Drew 15-3, but Friedhoff turned aside the first seven shots he faced in the period. But following a corner kick, Seth Michalak scored on a scramble from the right post to break open the scoreless game.

The Rangers, who were making their fourth appearance in the Landmark Conference final and their first since 2021, finished the season with their highest win total since going 12-2-4 in 2022.
