Men’s Basketball Upsets No. 24 TCNJ to Win Drew Tip-Off Tournament

MADISON, N.J. – Senior forward David Musial hit a pair of free throws with 2.2 seconds left and the Drew University men's basketball team held off a late rally to upset No. 24 College of New Jersey and win the Drew Tip-Off Tournament Sunday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.

In a battle between two NCAA Division III tournament participants from last season, the Rangers (2-0) led 80-70 with 1:57 left before the Lions (1-1) scored eight straight points to make it a two-point game with 26 seconds to go. TCNJ had a chance to tie it with four ticks showing but missed a pair of free throws, setting up Musial's game-clinching shots.

Senior guard Devon Musial posted a career-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting while grabbing a career-best seven rebounds for Drew, which avenged a 103-102 overtime loss to TCNJ in the championship game of last year's FDU-Florham Tournament. Four other Rangers scored in double figures, including junior guard Charlie Thornton, who netted 15 points off the bench.

Junior guards Andre De Los Reyes and Eli Yusavage added 13 points apiece for the Rangers while sophomore forward Ben Manns netted 12 points. David Musial contributed nine rebounds.

David Alexandre scored 21 points to lead TCNJ while Nick Koch scored 19 points.

In the tournament consolation game, Centenary University defeated FDU-Florham 65-52.

The first half was an extremely tight affair in which neither side led by more than six. Devon Musial was hot right from the start, scoring Drew's first 10 points as the Rangers went up 10-6. But the Lions came back to lead 29-23 with 6:29 left in the half before the Rangers outscored TCNJ 22-14 over the rest of the period, capped by a 3-pointer from senior forward Kevin Cronin with eight seconds remaining to go up 45-43 at the break.

The Rangers surged ahead by eight early in the second half and saw their lead reach double figures (58-48) for the first time following a David Musial layup with 12:30 remaining. The visitors would not go away, however, and inched to within two (62-60) with 9:29 to go. But a late 7-2 spurt, powered by a 3-pointer from Manns, a pair of free throws from Thornton, and a driving layup from Yusavage gave Drew its aforementioned 80-70 lead, setting up the tight finish.

The Blue and Green are back in action on Saturday, when they host Rowan University at 2 p.m. in a non-conference affair.
