Men’s Volleyball Rallies Past Eastern for First Win

SAINT DAVIDS, Pa. – The Drew University men's volleyball team rallied from two sets down to earn a 3-2 victory at Eastern University Tuesday evening, earning the team's first win of the season.

The Rangers won by scores of 21-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-22, and 15-9.

Junior Andrew DuHaime handed out 41 assists - the fifth-most in team history - for Drew while freshman Gio Martin helped lead a balanced offensive attack with 13 kills. Junior Jason Barbosa contributed a season-high 12 kills while hitting .526, and freshman Matthew Adegbite registered season-highs of 12 kills and four blocks. Freshman Michael Shipman added a season-high five blocks while first-years Gavin Cantada and Eric Forget scooped six digs each.

Kaodi Wokocha led the Eagles (7-5) with 14 kills, six digs, and six blocks.

The Rangers trailed by four early in the opening set before rallying late. The two sides were even at 21 before Eastern closed the set with four straight points.

The hosts broke open the second set with an 8-1 run that made it 15-8, and Drew was unable to get closer than four the rest of the way.

Junior Barend Oostdam helped spark the Rangers' comeback, throwing down three straight kills to open the third set. The Rangers stretched their lead to 11-5, prompting an Eastern timeout. The Eagles closed to within 13-11, only to see Drew respond with a 6-2 spurt to push its advantage back to six and led by at least three the rest of the way.

The Rangers led 14-11 in the fourth set but found themselves with their backs against the wall after an Eastern rally. The Eagles led 22-18, but an Eagle service error opened the door for a 7-0 set-ending run for Drew. Barbosa and Oostdam registered one kill apiece during the stretch.

The fifth and deciding set was tied 3-3 early, but the Rangers took a commanding lead following a 5-0 spurt. Adegbite kicked off the critical run with a kill before Eastern committing three straight hitting errors followed by a setting error. Eastern was unable to get closer than four the rest of the way, as a kill from Martin and a pair of terminations from Barbosa accounted for the final three Ranger points.

Drew returns home on Thursday, when they take on Kean University at 7 p.m.
