MADISON, N.J. – Senior forward
Peso Crump posted a season-high 21 points and a career-high 15 rebounds and the Drew University men's basketball team won its ninth game in a row with an 86-65 victory over Moravian University in Landmark Conference action Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.
Â
In addition, the Rangers (17-3, 13-0 LC) remained undefeated in conference play and tied the best record through 20 games in team history, equaling last year's squad.
Â
Drew never trailed after opening the game on a 24-6 run. The Greyhounds pulled to within nine at halftime and crept to within six midway through the second half, but the Rangers settled any doubt with an 18-7 game-ending run, when Crump scored eight of his points.
Â
Crump shot 8-for-11 from the floor while posting his second career 20-point outing and his third career double-double. Eleven of his rebounds came on the offensive glass.
Â
Senior guard
Josh Kline added 15 points and four steals for Drew, which has now tied the second-longest winning streak in team history. Sophomore forward
Matthew Zenker contributed 12 points and a career-high eight rebounds while junior forward
David Musial contributed seven rebounds and five steals.
Â
Chad Kratzer netted 12 points for Moravian (12-8, 7-6 LC), which was held to 17 points below its season scoring average.
Â
Balanced scoring did the trick for the Rangers early on as seven different players scored during the team's opening run, which was capped by a 3-pointer from graduate guard
James Anderson with 12:43 left in the first half. The lead swelled to 19 (29-10) on a 3-pointer from sophomore guard
Eli Yusavage, but the Greyhounds climbed back into with an 11-2 run and trailed 39-30 at the break.
Â
Moravian continued to chip away early in the second half and made it 51-45 on a pair of free throws with 12:45 remaining. But the Rangers promptly answered by scoring the next five points on a pair of Kline foul shots and another triple from Anderson that made it 56-45 with 12:13 left.
Â
Drew's lead hovered around 10 over the next eight minutes before the Rangers pulled away down the stretch. Crump kicked off his team's late surge with back-to-back layups before Kline came up with a steal and a bucket. Zenker then drained a 3-ball with 3:05 remaining to cap a 7-0 run and put his team up 75-58. Moravian was unable to get closer than 15 the rest of the way.
Â
The Rangers resume their schedule on Saturday, when they visit Juniata College in a Landmark Conference tilt starting at 4 p.m.
