Women’s Hoops Rallies for OT Victory at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior guard Maddie Beyer hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with nine seconds left in overtime and the Drew University women's basketball team rallied for a 62-58 victory at Moravian University Wednesday evening in a Landmark Conference affair.

The Rangers (12-8, 7-6 LC) trailed by 13 in the third quarter before outscoring the Greyhounds 16-9 in the fourth quarter to force the extra session.

Sophomore guard Amy Rachilla led the Rangers with 14 points and five rebounds while shooting 9-for-10 at the foul line. Beyer netted 10 points on the night while sophomore guard Miabella Diaz posted nine points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Olivia Aliotta and junior forward Gianna Pica added nine points apiece for Drew, which earned its first-ever season sweep over Moravian.

Sam Osorio scored 15 points for the Greyhounds while Lanie Herbert registered 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Moravian went ahead 58-57 with 19 seconds left in overtime after Julianna Vassallo drained a 3 from the left corner. But Beyer had the answer for the Rangers, connecting from the right wing to put her team up by one. The Greyhounds then lost the ball near midcourt, and Aliotta dove to the floor to force a jump ball. The possession arrow favored the Rangers, and Rachilla was quickly fouled before sinking two free throws with less than a second left to set the final score.

Neither side led by more than three in the first quarter and it was a 10-10 game heading into the second period, when the Greyhounds went on to outscore the Rangers 18-8 to open up a 10-point halftime advantage.

Moravian took its 13-point lead when Vassallo connected on a 3-pointer with 4:27 left. But the Rangers outscored the Greyhounds 6-0 to end the period, cutting the gap to 40-33.

Beyer hit a pair of free throws in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to pull Drew to within five, but Moravian answered with a 5-0 spurt to push its advantage back to 10 (45-35) with 7:12 left. However, that's when the Rangers used an 11-0 run to come all the way back to take the lead. Pica jump-started the surge with a layup before Aliotta scored a pair of buckets to make it 45-41 with 5:14 remaining.

Freshman guard Jocelyn Kingsley spilt a trip to the foul line before dropping in a layup to make it a one-point game. Rachilla then sunk a pair at the charity stripe to put Drew up 46-45 with 3:12 to go.

Rachilla gave Drew a 49-47 lead with 29 seconds remaining, but Emma Pukszyn converted a layup with eight ticks showing to pull the Greyhounds even. Diaz then missed a jumper and Moravian rebounded, but after a timeout the hosts were unable to get off a shot.

It was a back-and-forth affair in overtime, which featured five lead changes. A Beyer 3-ball and a pair of Rachilla foul shots put Drew up 57-53, but Moravian was not done yet. Vassallo nailed a jumper before the 'Hounds forced a turnover in the backcourt, setting up Vassallo's late trey.

The Rangers continue their season on Saturday, when they visit Juniata College at 2 p.m. in another Landmark Conference outing.
