Baseball Drops a Pair to Anna Maria in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Drew University baseball team continued its spring break trip to Florida with a pair of seven-inning games versus Anna Maria College on Tuesday.

The Amcats won the opener 8-3 before rallying for a 12-9 victory in a back-and-forth nightcap.

In the first game, Anna Maria (7-3) never trailed after scoring four runs over the first two innings. The Rangers (5-4) came back to make it 4-3 after four innings of play before the Amcats pushed across four runs over the last two innings.

Fifth-year Anthony Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead Drew in the opener. Five different Rangers took to the mound, with freshman Matthew Nicholson recording the longest outing. Making his collegiate debut, he tossed 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out two.

In the second game, Anna Maria led 5-2 after four innings of play before the two sides erupted for a combined 13 runs on nine hits in the fifth.

The Rangers scored six runs in the top half to assume an 8-5 lead. Sophomore Jack Mocik drilled a two-run double in the inning while freshman Anthony Vallaro also doubled home a run. However, the Amcats answered with seven runs on four hits, a walk, and hit batsman, and two errors in the bottom half to go up 12-8.

Drew threatened in the top of the seventh, putting the tying run on deck after senior Mike Gallaro walked and classmate Raiden Yost singled with one out. Senior pinch-runner Matt Myers scored on a groundout from senior Anthony Diaz Jr. before Anna Maria induced a game-ending groundout.

Freshman Zach Maxwell led the Rangers at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, while first-year Connor Stokoe went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Four pitchers saw action for Drew, including senior Dominic Goodenough, who tossed a perfect sixth inning.

The Rangers conclude their trip on Wednesday, when they take on Saint Scholastica in a single nine-inning game starting at 10 a.m.
