Moravian Pulls Away Late From Baseball

MADISON, N.J. – Senior Raiden Yost turned in a big performance on the mound at the plate, but the Drew University baseball team lost by a final of 10-6 to Moravian University in Landmark Conference action Tuesday afternoon at Doc Young Field at Lonnstrom Stadium.

The Rangers (6-8, 1-3 LC) carried a 6-5 lead into the eighth inning, but the Greyhounds (8-7, 2-2 LC) scored five times on four walks, one hit, and one hit batsman to set the final score.

Yost started on the mound and fired 4 2/3 innings of no-hit ball before exiting after 82 pitches. He finished with three strikeouts and five walks while yielding three runs (two earned). Offensively, he finished 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored.

Freshmen Zach Maxwell and Anthony Vallaro collected two hits apiece for the Rangers, who outhit Moravian 10-3. However, the Greyhounds took advantage of 12 walks and three hit batters.

Senior Anthony Diaz Jr. singled in his first at-bat to push his career hits total to 140, moving into sole possession of 10th in school history while surpassing Eric Laub C'00 and Tom Murray C'12.

Matt Snyder earned the win for the Greyhounds, tossing four shutout innings in relief.

Yost put the Rangers up 2-0 when he lined a two-run shot over the rightfield fence for his first homer of the season. He knocked in another run with a single up the middle in the third as Drew assumed a 3-0 advantage.

Moravian pushed across its first run on two walks and an infield error in the fourth, then went up 4-3 in the fifth. The Greyhounds loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a hit batsman before Ronnie Werkeiser cleared the bases with a bloop single into left.

The visitors scored another run without the benefit of a hit in the sixth to go up 5-3. But Drew reclaimed the lead with a three-run sixth, which included an RBI-single from Vallaro and a double steal in which freshman Frank Master swiped home. The Rangers took the lead when Moravian attempted to throw Vallaro out at home on a grounder to third, but the throw was off he mark, setting up Moravian's late rally.

Drew continues its eight-game homestand on Thursday, when it hosts Centenary in a non-conference outing starting at 3:30 p.m.
