Lowe’s Game-Winner Vaults Women’s Lax Over FDU

MADISON, N.J. – Freshman Kristina Lowe scored the game-winning goal with 36 seconds left and the Drew University women's lacrosse team earned a thrilling 14-13 victory over cross-town rival FDU-Florham in a non-conference tilt Wednesday evening.

The Rangers erased a four-goal second-quarter deficit and eventually built a four-goal lead late of their own late in the third quarter. However, the Devils tied it twice in the last six minutes, including with 43 seconds to go. But the Rangers won the ensuing draw, when junior Aubrey Welch spiked the ball to herself before dishing a pass to a breaking Lowe, who sprinted around a defender before tossing in the game-winner.

Junior Emma Gallaro and sophomore Madi Strong scored three goals apiece for Drew while sophomore Grace Patane added two goals and two assists. Lowe and junior Emily Monaco scored two goals each, and freshman Hayden Scotti added one goal and two assists.

Defensively, sophomore Paige Shaw made 11 saves while Welch posted six ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Julianna Medina and Alexis Ashton scored five goals each for FDU (1-3).

The Devils led 4-0 at the end of the first quarter and 6-2 with 11:25 left in the half before the Rangers reeled off five unanswered goals to seize the lead. Gallaro, Welch, and Scotti scored one goal apiece before Monaco struck twice. The Devils scored the final goal of the half to make it a 7-7 game at the break.

The Rangers outscored FDU 5-3 in the third quarter and opened the period on a 3-0 run, fueled by goals from Strong, Gallaro, and Lowe. The hosts stopped the bleeding with 7:27 left in the quarter before Drew answered with strikes from Patane and Strong to go up 12-8 with 3:56 to go in the period.

FDU scored the last two goals of the period to make it 12-10, then netted two more at the start of the fourth quarter to pull even. But Patane scored a big goal with 1:12 remaining to put Drew up 13-12, setting up the cliffhanger of a finish.

The Rangers pick up their schedule on Saturday, when they visit Susquehanna University in their Landmark Conference opener starting at 1 p.m.
