Quick Start Lifts Susquehanna Over Rangers in Landmark Opener

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's lacrosse team outscored Susquehanna University 6-5 over the final three quarters, but the River Hawks used a big opening period to hand the Rangers a 10-7 setback in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
 
Senior Mike DeMayo posted two goals and two assists, senior Tommy Larmore netted two goals and one assist, sophomore Jake Rainero won 16-of-21 faceoffs, and sophomore Joe Barnish made 16 saves for the Rangers (4-4, 0-1 LC).
 
Chris Ciccarello recorded four goals and one assist to pace the River Hawks (8-1, 1-0 LC).
 
Susquehanna scored the games's first three goals before Tommy Larmore put the Rangers on the scoreboard. The visitors struck for two more goals before the end of the period to assume a 5-1 lead at the end of the quarter.
 
Each side accounted for just one goal in the second quarter. Senior Luke Bruther made it 5-2 when he struck for the Rangers with 3:15 left before Susquehanna answered less than a minute later to assume a 6-2 halftime advantage.
 
Drew twice edged to within two in the third quarter. Freshman twin brothers Joseph Carabetta and Nicholas Carabetta scored back-to-back goals to make it 6-4 with 11:51 left in the period before Susquehanna answered with a pair of tallies. Tommy Larmore and DeMayo answered with a pair of goals 53 seconds apart to pull the Rangers to within 8-6 before the River Hawks scored to make it 9-6 heading into the final stanza.
 
The fourth quarter was a repeat of the second period, with the two teams scoring just one goal apiece. Susquehanna scored its final goal with 6:55 remaining before DeMayo set the final score with 5:24 left.
 
The Rangers returns to Landmark Conference action next Saturday, when they host Catholic University at 1 p.m.
