MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's lacrosse team cruised to a 20-8 Landmark Conference victory over Lycoming College Saturday afternoon on a cold and wet day at Ranger Stadium.
After the game, Drew held a brief ceremony on the field to honor its three seniors –
Luke Bruther,
Mike DeMayo, and
Ben Johnson.
The Rangers (7-6, 3-3 LC) held decided advantages in nearly every category, including shots (57-29), ground balls (45-16), and faceoffs (21-9). In addition, Drew cashed in on special teams as well, finishing 6-for-6 on extra-man opportunities while scoring a man-down goal as well.
Eight different players scored a goal for Drew, including Bruther, who tossed in a career-high five goals. DeMayo added four goals, three assists, and five ground balls while graduate student
Tommy Larmore scored three times. Freshman
Nick Carabetta added two goals and two assists while twin brother
Joseph Carabetta scored twice. Graduate student
Colin Diodato contributed one goal and three assists.
Sophomore
Jake Rainero enjoyed another big day on faceoffs, finishing 19-for-28 at the X while picking up 14 ground balls. Sophomore
Eli Sanford added three caused turnovers while classmate
Joe Barnish collected 10 saves.
Joey Hoover and Shayne Wilson scored three goals apiece for the Warriors (5-7, 1-5 LC) while Ben Franco made 22 saves.
The Rangers never trailed after opening the game on a 3-0 spurt, with
Joseph Carabetta,
Nick Carabetta, and Bruther all finding the back of the net over the opening eight minutes. The Warriors closed the quarter on a 3-0 surge of their own, however, to pull even at the end of the opening period.
Drew then broke it open with a 9-0 run in the second quarter, when Bruther recorded three goals. Four other Rangers scored in the quarter, including DeMayo, who deposited his man-down goal during the run.
Lycoming posted a brief comeback when it opened the second half on a 4-0 spurt to make it 12-7. However, the Rangers used a 3-0 run to kick off an 8-1 burst to end the game. Bruther,
Joseph Carabetta, and Rainero all scored in the third quarter before Lycoming scored to make it 15-8 after three periods of play.
DeMayo and Larmore were the only players to score in the fourth quarter, when DeMayo struck three times and Larmore cashed in twice.
The Rangers play their regular-season home finale on Wednesday, when they take on Moravian University in a big Landmark Conference tilt starting at 7 p.m.
