Softball Walks Off in Opener, Sweeps Scranton

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University softball team won on a walk-off hit in the opener, then cruised to an eight-run victory in the second game en route to a Landmark Conference sweep of the University of Scranton on Tuesday at the Drew Softball Complex.

Junior Josie Di Troia knocked in the game-winning run in first game, a 3-2 Ranger victory. Drew defeated the Royals 11-3 in the second game, which was shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule.

Freshman Gabby Duran fired a three-hit complete game in the opener for the Rangers (14-16, 4-6 LC) before senior Teagan Bradley tossed a five-hitter in the second game.

Junior Olivia Magliacano enjoyed a big game at the plate for the Rangers, finishing 3-for-6 with three runs scored, including the game-winning run in the opener.

In the first game, Drew jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, when Duran helped herself with an RBI-double.

Duran (3-3) blanked the Royals over the first four innings in which she was nearly perfect, as she retired 13 in a row from the first through the fifth innings. But Scranton rallied for two runs with two outs in the fifth to go up 2-1.

The Rangers tied it up in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Di Troia, and the game was one out from heading to extra innings before Drew pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Magliacano worked a two-out walk before junior Haley Meierhofer singled through the left side. Di Troia followed up with a bloop between the second baseman and rightfielder that fell onto the edge of the outfield grass as Magliacano raced around to score without a throw.

After Scranton's two-run sixth, Duran retired the final seven batters of the game. She struck out six and walked just one.

In the second game, Drew scored at least two runs in each of the four innings in which they hit. The Rangers jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first, which was capped by a two-run single from senior Delaney O'Donoghue, before pushing their lead to 5-0 in the second.

Bradley, meanwhile, was in command early on, retiring the first eight batters of the game. But Scranton rallied in the third, scoring three runs on four straight hits to make it 5-3.

The Rangers put the game out of reach with three runs apiece in the third and the fourth. Junior Zoey Shimp roped a two-run single in the third before piled up four hits in the fourth, which included an RBI-double from Magliacano and run-scoring singles from Meierhofer and Di Troia.

Bradley (3-3) also closed the game strong, retiring six of the final seven batters she faced. She did not walk a batter and struck out three.

Magliacano finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Shimp also crossed the plate three times.

The Rangers return to action on Thursday, when they visit Rutgers-Newark at 3 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
