Women’s Lacrosse Edged by Moravian in OT

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Moravian University scored with 10 seconds left to force overtime, then scored the game-winning goal 47 seconds into the extra session to hand the Rangers a tough 17-16 setback in Landmark Conference women's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon.
 
Sophomore Madi Strong and junior Aubrey Welch posted five goals and one assist apiece for the Rangers while sophomore Grace Patane added two goals and two assists. Freshman Kristina Lowe and junior Emily Monaco contributed four draw controls each.
 
Seven different players scored a goal for the Greyhounds (9-6, 5-2 LC), with Alex Cherenson, Kathryn Hunsinger, and Madi Dipel netting three apiece.
 
In an extremely tight matchup, neither side led by more than three goals at any point. It was a 6-6 game after an offensively-charged opening quarter in which Welch scored two of her goals, including one with 42 seconds left that put her team up 6-5. Freshman Hayden Scotti, Patane, Monaco, and Strong added one goal each in the period.
 
The Rangers outscored Moravian 3-1 in the second quarter, with Strong scoring all three goals, to assume a 9-7 lead at halftime.
 
Drew also outscored Moravian 4-3 in the third quarter and carried a three-goal lead into the final stanza. Lowe, freshman Zoey Pipher, Strong found the back of the net before Patane struck with 2:42 on the clock to put the Rangers up 13-10.
 
The offensive fireworks continued in the final quarter, when the Greyhounds outscored Drew 6-3 to pull even. Welch scored twice over a 1:27 span to give Drew a 15-12 advantage with 10:14 remaining, but the hosts responded with a 3-0 spurt to tie it up with 4:52 left.
 
Welch scored her final goal with 2:12 left, but Moravian answered when Melissa Elefonte scored late to force overtime. The 'Hounds then won the opening draw before Cherenson netted her game-winner.
 
The Rangers return home to face Goucher College on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Landmark Conference affair on Senior Day.
