Elizabethtown Takes a Pair From Rangers

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Drew University baseball team lost the first two games of its Landmark Conference series at Elizabethtown College on Saturday, as the Blue Jays captured the opener in 15-1 in seven innings before winning 9-4 in the second game.

In the first game, Elizabethtown (25-11, 18-5 LC) broke it open early with a seven-run second inning that made it 9-0. Joey Smith (3-1) made the lead stand up and finished with a three-hit, seven-inning complete game for Etown.

Freshman Nicholas Garbooshian (1-1) started on the mound in the opener for the Rangers (17-17, 9-11 LC) and pitched two innings. Freshman Ryan Reynolds came on to throw three innings before sophomore Justin Bonito tossed one inning.

In the second game, the Blue Jays led 1-0 through three innings before the Rangers tied it on an RBI-double from freshman Anthony Vallaro in the fourth. But Etown scored the next five runs to assume a 6-1 lead after five innings of play.

The hosts added another run in the seventh before Drew scored three in the eighth to make it 7-4. Vallaro drilled another RBI-double before freshman Dylan Gallagher capped the inning with a run-scoring single. But the Blue Jays set the final with two runs in the bottom half.

Vallaro finished 3-for-4 and slugged three doubles in a game for the second time this season. Fifth-year Anthony Hernandez scored a pair of runs for the Rangers.

Sophomore Tyler Bell started on the mound for Drew and worked 5 1/3 innings before junior Brandon Kobryn pitched the final 2 2/3 innings.

The two sides complete the season series with a single game on Sunday starting at noon.
