Catholic Takes Two From Baseball

MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore Tyler Bell pitched into the seventh inning in the second game, but Catholic University pulled away with three late runs to edge the Rangers 4-1 in the second game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Friday at Doc Young Field at Lonnstrom Stadium.

With the win, the Cardinals (22-16, 13-10 LC) completed a sweep after capturing the opener 10-1.

In the first game, junior Brandon Kobryn worked a long relief outing, tossing 6 1/3 innings out of the bullpen after entering the game with the bases loaded and none out in the top of the first. Catholic scored four runs in the inning, but Kobryn blanked the Cardinals from the second through the fifth innings. He finished with five strikeouts while yielding three runs on four hits and three walks.

Catholic pushed across a run in the sixth that made it 5-1 before adding five runs over the last three innings.

The Rangers scored their lone run in the first game on an tape-measure home run from senior Will Fritch, who clouted a tape-measure homer to left in the bottom of the first for his team-leading fifth long ball of the season.

In the second game, Bell (2-2) yielded just two runs on six hits through 6 2/3 innings, walking four and striking out five.

Senior Raiden Yost and junior Kyle Johnson each finished 2-for-4 in the nightcap for the Rangers.

Neither side scored in the second game until Yost ripped an RBI-single in the bottom of the third to make it 1-0.

The Cardinals pulled even in the fourth before scoring the go-ahead run in the seventh. Bell recorded the first two outs before the top of the lineup rallied with a single and a walk, prompting a Ranger pitching change.

Sophomore Aidan Bauer took the mound to face No. 3 hitter Mitchel Johnson, who also worked a walk to load the bases. A controversial balk was then called, allowing the go-ahead run to score. Catholic tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth.

Meanwhile, Catholic starter Cody Bosak pitched 6 2/3 innings as well. Jack Scholz worked a perfect ninth to earn a save.

The two sides conclude their three-game series on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on Senior Day.
