Field Hockey Wins Season Opener

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Sophomore Ellie Kopec scored what held up to be the game-winning goal early in the third quarter and the Drew University field hockey team earned a 2-1 victory at King's College in its season opener on Friday.

Kopec also assisted on Drew's first goal, as she set up a tally from sophomore Emily Caporrino with 4:15 left in the opening quarter. But Abbey Grulke pulled the Monarchs even just over two minutes into the second quarter, and it was a 1-1 game at the half.

Just over four minutes into the third quarter, Kopec drilled in a pass from junior Emma Rider to put her team up 2-1. It was Kopec's third career goal and second game-winner.

Drew controlled the game throughout the night and held decided advantages in shots (14-1) and corners (10-1). However Emily Bollinger kept it clsose for King's, making eight saves.

Junior Beth Kelly went the distance in goal for Drew.

The Rangers pick up their schedule on Tuesday, when they visit Manhattanville University in a non-conference tilt at 4 p.m.
