MADISON, N.J. – Freshman
Bella Fini posted her first collegiate hat trick, pouring in three goals and one assist to lead the Drew University field hockey team to an 8-2 victory over William Paterson University in its home opener Wednesday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.
With the win, the Rangers improved to 4-0 for the first time since the 2013 team opened the year with 10 straight wins.
Fini needed less than three quarters to net all of her goals, scoring her final tally with just three seconds left in the third period.
Sophomore
Emily Caporrino added two goals and two assists for Drew while junior
Chandler Straub contributed two goals and one assist. Freshman
Karine Johnson tacked on one goal and one helper.
The Rangers outshot the Pioneers 31-3 and held a 13-2 advantage in penalty corners. Drew did not allow a shot on goal in the entire second half.
Grace Jenkins made 18 saves for William Paterson. Junior
Beth Kelly played the first three quarters in goal for Drew before sophomore
Dominique Flores came on for the final period.
Straub put the Rangers on the scoreboard just over two minutes into the game, rebounding a shot in front to make it 1-0. William Paterson (0-4) tied it with 8:42 left in the first quarter, but Drew answered with two goals late from Fini late in the period. She scored her first goal with 5:20 left, cashing in off a pass from Caporrino, then converted a feed from Straub to make it a 3-1 game at the end of the opening stanza.
Ali Stone cut the gap to one with her second goal of the game for William Paterson with 8:20 remaining in the half. But less than two minutes later, the Rangers answered when Caporrino slipped behind the defense to give the hosts a 4-2 lead at the intermission.
Drew lit the lamp twice apiece in each of the last two quarters, starting with Johnson's first collegiate goal with 3:19 remaining in the third period. Caporrino stepped in front of a Pioneer free hit in Drew's attacking zone and sent a cross to Johnson, who beat a defender and the goalie from the left post.
Junior
Caroline Larsen set up Fini's final goal, sending in a pass from the right elbow just outside the arc. Fini took one dribble and sent the ball through the five-hole to give her team a 6-2 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Caporrino struck again with 11:21 on the clock, converting a spinning shot in front of the goalie off a centering pass from Fini. Straub set the final score with 8:29 left, rebounding in her own shot off a defensive save.
The Rangers pick up their schedule on Saturday, when they visit Widener University at 1 p.m. in another non-conference affair.
