Fini’s Hat Trick, OT Game-Winner Lift Rangers at Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Freshman Bella Fini notched her second hat trick of the season and scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Drew University field hockey team to a 3-2 victory at Eastern University in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday.

Fini, who netted three goals for the second time in three games, now leads the team and the Landmark Conference with eight goals on the season.

With the game tied 2-2, a lightning delay was called just 45 seconds into the extra session. After play resumed, junior goalie Beth Kelly saved a pair of potential game-winning shots from Eastern before Fini drilled in the game-winner just over six minutes into the period.

Kelly finished with a season-high nine saves for the Rangers (5-1), who are off to their best start through six games since the 2013 squad opened 10-0. Angelina Catania made eight saves for the Eagles (4-2).

It was the second year in a row that Drew and Eastern had their matchup come down to the wire. Last year, the Rangers scored the game-winning goal with nine seconds left in a 5-4 victory.

Fini staked Drew to an early 2-0 lead, scoring with 2:50 left in the first quarter and again just 32 seconds into the second period. But Eastern's Karlee Howard answered less than a minute later and it was a 2-1 game at the intermission.

The Rangers appeared to be on their way to victory in regulation before Howard stuck again with 2:17 remaining.

Drew returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts cross-town rival FDU-Florham at 6 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
