MADISON, N.J. – Three different players scored a goal and the Drew University field hockey team defeated cross-town rival FDU-Florham 3-0 in a non-conference tilt Saturday evening in Ranger Stadium.
The Rangers (6-1), off to their best seven-game start since 2013, claimed the Battle of Madison Avenue for the second year in a row.
Senior
Beth Kelly made four saves to earn her second shutout of the season for Drew, which outshot the Devils 17-6. Adrianna Goodwin turned aside eight shots for FDU (3-4).
In the final minute of the first quarter, sophomore
Emily Caporrino gave the Rangers all of the offense they would need when she drilled in her sixth goal of the season. Junior
Emma Rider ignited a Drew counterattack when she intercepted a pass in the defensive zone and at the other end, freshman
Karine Johnson centered a pass inside the circle to freshman
Bella Fini. She flicked a quick pass to Caporrino, who fired in a shot in front of the goalie.
Drew struck again late in the second quarter. Rider accepted a corner pass at the top of the circle and dished it off to sophomore
Ellie Kopec, who fired off a shot from the left elbow. Johnson tipped in the offering on the left post for her second goal of the season.
Fini capped the scoring with 5:58 left. Caporrino broke up a pass in the defensive end before Fini tracked it down, weaved through several defenders, and blasted in a shot from just inside the circle for her ninth goal of the season.
The Rangers continue their season on Wednesday, when they visit Western Connecticut at 6 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
