DANBURY, Conn. – Sophomore
Emily Caporrino scored two goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime, and junior
Beth Kelly made a career-high 17 saves as the Drew University field hockey team defeated Western Connecticut University 3-2 in a non-conference outing Wednesday evening.
The Rangers (7-1) continued their best start since 2013 with their second overtime victory in three games. Drew also defeated Eastern University 3-2 last Wednesday.
Drew never trailed and overcame a 31-22 shot deficit.
Junior
Liriana Seferovic put Drew on top 1-0 midway through the opening period, scoring on a pass from sophomore
Ellie Kopec on a penalty corner.
Neither side scored in the second quarter and the Rangers carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission. The Rangers allowed only two shots on goal in the opening half, and both were saved by Kelly.
The Wolves (3-4) turned up the pressure in the third quarter, when it outshot Drew 11-5. The hosts tied the game midway through the stanza, but Caporrino put the Rangers back on top with 1:34 on the clock, scoring on a three-shot flurry following a corner to hand the Rangers a 2-1 lead after three quarters of play. Kelly turned aside six shots in the period.
WestConn tied the game at 2-2 with 8:48 remaining, eventually sending the game to overtime. The Wolves outshot the Rangers 8-4 in the quarter, when Kelly recorded three saves. She made six more stops in the first OT, when the hosts held a 6-1 shot advantage.
Each side attempted two shots in the second bonus session before Caporrino struck with 5:23 to go, rebounding home her own shot following a goalie save. It was her third game-winning goal of the season and her second multi-goal game of the year.
The Rangers play their Landmark Conference opener on Saturday, when they visit Goucher College at 1 p.m.
