TOWSON, Md. – Freshman
Bella Fini scored the game-winning goal with 1:09 remaining and the Drew University field hockey team rallied for a 2-1 victory at Goucher College in its Landmark Conference opener on Saturday.
The Rangers (8-1, 1-0 LC), who pushed their winning streak to four, trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth quarter before scoring twice in the final 10 minutes.
Junior
Beth Kelly made eight saves for Drew as the Rangers overcame a 23-11 shot deficit.
Neither side scored in the opening half, when the Gophers (3-5, 0-1 LC) outshot Drew 8-4.
Goucher broke open the scoreless game with 5:50 remaining in the third quarter, striking on a penalty stroke. The Gophers outshot the Rangers 10-1 in the period, but that's when Kelly made three of her saves.
Drew found its offensive touch in the final quarter. Junior
Chandler Straub pulled the Rangers even with 10:34 remaining, punching in an unassisted tally, and it remained a 1-1 game before Fini converted a pass from freshman
Elizabeth Harbeson for the go-ahead tally and her 10th goal of the year.
Neither side managed another shot after Fini's game-winner.
The Rangers return to action on Tuesday, when they host Delaware Valley University in a non-conference tilt starting at 4 p.m.
