Men’s Soccer Downs Western Connecticut

DANBURY, Conn. – Junior Ignacio Martinez netted the game-winning goal in the 84th minute and the Drew University men's soccer team earned a 2-1 non-conference victory at Western Connecticut University Wednesday evening.

It was the second game-winning goal of the season for Martinez, who also assisted on the team's first goal. Sophomore Konstantinos Papanikolas added one goal and one assist for the Rangers.

WestConn held an 18-16 edge in shots, but the Rangers yielded only two shots on goal.

With the match tied 1-1, freshman Lucas Czerniak sent a booming free kick from midfield into Drew's attacking zone. It was momentarily cleared by the Wolves, but Papanikolas recovered and lobbed a pass into the box, where Martinez headed into off the goalie's fingertips and into the right side of the net.

The Wolves threatened when they earned a corner kick with just under a minute to go, but a header sailed over the crossbar.

Junior Jacob Avni made his first start in goal since the 2023 season for the Rangers and recorded one save. Michael Arcuri stopped five shots for WestConn.

In the seventh minute, Papanikolas put the Rangers on the scoreboard with his first collegiate goal, heading in a corner kick from Martinez. Drew held a 6-4 shot advantage in the half, when each goalie made one save.

The Wolves pulled even early in the second half, scoring in the 47th minute. WestConn outshot the Rangers 12-10 over the remainder of the period, but failed to put one on goal.

The Rangers continue their season on Saturday, when they host St. Joseph's-Long Island at 6 p.m. in a non-conference affair.
