BERKELEY SPRINGS, W. Va. – The Drew University women's golf team opened its season with an impressive showing at the Shenandoah Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday at Cacapon Resort State Park.
The Rangers came within a stroke of their school record for 36 holes, shooting a 647 (324-323) to place third out of 13 schools. Drew placed just one stroke behind runner-up Virginia Wesleyan College.
Sophomore
Josephine Nguyen led the way for Drew, firing a 9-over-par 153 (76-77) to finish in a tie for fifth among 70 golfers. She carded four birdies and 22 pars for the tournament
Senior
Roxy Riles was just one stroke back for the Rangers, shooting a pair of 77s to tie for seventh. She registered four birdies, including three on Sunday, and parred 18 holes.
Rounding out the team scoring for Drew were sophomores
Cassie Sengul, who tied for 22nd with a 165 (84-81), and
Isabella Borte, who tied for 45th with a 177 (87-90). Sengul shot one birdie and 13 pars while Borte posted one birdie and 11 pars.
Senior
Emily Rhode also competed and placed in a three-way tie for 51st with a 180 (92-88), parring 13 holes for the weekend.
Led by medalist Kate Parson's even-par 144 (69-75), Marymount University captured the team title with a 604.
The Rangers are back in action on Sept. 29, when they travel to the Stevenson University Invitational at Piney Branch Golf Club in Upperco, Md.
