Men’s Basketball Powers Past Goucher

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's basketball team shot a season-high 56.7% from the field and the Rangers cruised to a 97-70 victory over Goucher College in Landmark Conference action Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.

Junior guard Eli Yusavage scored a game-high 23 points while shooting 8-for-11 from the field and 6-for-6 at the foul line to lead Drew (10-2, 4-1 LC), which led by 10 at the half before outscoring the Gophers 47-30 in the second period.

Junior guard Andre De Los Reyes added 15 points for the Rangers, who had 12 players figure into the scoring column. Freshman guard Erik Porch netted a season-high 12 points while sophomore forward Ben Manns contributed 11 points and a career-high nine rebounds.

Darnell Morris paced Goucher (4-8, 1-4 LC) with 18 points.

It was a close game for most of the first half, which featured three ties and six lead changes. The Rangers held a 34-33 edge with 5:07 to go in the opening stanza before opening up some breathing room with an 8-0 run. Goucher pulled to within six before the Rangers knocked down a pair of 3-pointers on their final two possessions of the half, including a buzzer-beater from Porch that made it 40-30 at the break.

The Rangers never allowed the Gophers to get close in the second half, when they led by at least nine the entire way. Drew led 55-46 with 17:02 left before a quick 7-0 spurt made it a 16-point game. Senior forward Kevin Cronin sparked the run with a layup before Yusavage scored five straight points.

The hosts settled any doubt with a 20-7 run late in the game that turned a 15-point lead into a 28-point cushion with 2:57 remaining. Yusavage helped fuel the outburst with eight points.

The Rangers return to Landmark Conference play on Sunday, when they take on Catholic University at the Palestra in Philadelphia in a rematch of last year's Landmark Conference championship game.
