Men’s Soccer Plays Etown to Scoreless Draw

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's soccer team posted its fourth consecutive shutout, blanking Elizabethtown College in a 0-0 Landmark Conference tie Wednesday evening in Ranger Stadium.

With two regular-season matches left, the Rangers (8-3-4, 4-2-1 LC) find themselves tied with Juniata College for fourth place in the Landmark Conference standings with 13 points.

For the second match in a row, senior Donovan Friedhoff made a crucial save in the final minute of play. With just under 40 seconds left, Caba Alvarez rifled a close-range shot at the left side of the net, where Friedhoff made a leaping deflection before sophomore Lucas Czerniak and freshman Julian O'Neill cleared the ball away. Friedhoff also stopped a shot in the closing seconds of Drew's 1-0 upset over then-No. 10-ranked Catholic this past Saturday.

The Rangers have now posted four straight shutouts, the team's most consecutive clean sheets since blanking five straight opponents from Sept. 8-19, 2012. Additionally, Friedhoff's four consecutive individual shutouts are the most since Michael Reyes notched four in a row from Sept. 8-15, 2012.

Drew and Elizabethtown (6-4-6, 2-1-4 LC) each took 11 shots for the game. Logan Sumner stopped six shots for the Blue Jays.

The Rangers had a number of shots that nearly found the back of the net. During the 73rd minute, a blast from senior Kevin Martinez from up close deflected off a defender and required a diving stop from Sumner at the left post. Then in the 79th minute, sophomore Julius van Schijndel missed just high on a rocket from inside the box after a cross was deflected off a defender.

Drew picks up its schedule on Saturday, when it visits Juniata starting at 1 p.m.
