HUNTINGDON, Pa. — Senior goalkeeper
Donovan Friedhoff made a school-record 15 saves, but the fifth-seeded Drew University men's soccer team saw its season come to an end against fourth-seeded Juniata College in the first round of the Landmark Conference Championships Saturday afternoon at Gibbel Stadium. The teams played to a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes before the Eagles advanced with a 4-1 victory in penalty kicks.
The Rangers struck first in the 10th minute when senior
Andrew Dunne scored off an assist from junior
Kosta Papanikolas, giving Drew an early 1-0 advantage.
Drew was reduced to 10 players following a red card in the 27th minute, forcing the Rangers to play shorthanded for the remainder of the match. Despite the disadvantage, Drew maintained its one-goal lead for much of the contest behind a strong defensive effort and Friedhoff's performance in goal.
The Eagles eventually broke through in the 84th minute when Steeve Jean-Baptiste scored off an assist from Tremaine Henry to tie the match at 1-1.
Friedhoff continued to deliver for the Rangers, making a crucial left-leg save in the closing minutes of regulation to keep the match even. His 15 saves broke the previous school record of 13, set by Peter Boyer C'04 against Johns Hopkins on Sept. 13, 2003.
Neither team found the back of the net during two 10-minute overtime periods, sending the match to a penalty-kick shootout. Juniata prevailed 4-1 to advance to the conference semifinals.
The Eagles outshot the Rangers 26-5 and held a 16-2 advantage in shots on goal. Juniata also finished with an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
The contest marked the second meeting between the two teams in eight days after Juniata defeated Drew 2-0 in their regular-season matchup on Oct. 24.
The Rangers were making their 13th appearance in the Landmark Conference tournament after reaching the championship match last season. Saturday's contest marked the first postseason meeting between Drew and Juniata.
The Eagles advance to face top-seeded Scranton in the Landmark Conference semifinals Wednesday, Nov. 4, while the Rangers conclude their 2026 campaign with an 8-5-5 overall record and a 4-4-1 mark in Landmark Conference play.
