MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University baseball team rallied to tie the game in the eighth inning, but FDU-Florham won on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth on the second and final day of the Madison Avenue Challenge on Saturday.
Â
The Rangers (1-2) trailed 2-0 before pulling even in the eighth, when senior
Nick Bisaccia led off with a single and scored two batters later on a triple to right-center from freshman
Nick Donofrio. Sophomore
Anthony Vallaro followed up with an RBI-single to make it a 2-2 game.
Â
After junior reliever
Tyler Bell worked a three-up, three-down eighth, the Devils' John Rolli led off the ninth with a double and moved to third on a groundout before Christian Zamrok ended the game with a single.
Â
Freshman
Jayce Thoroughman made his first collegiate start on the mound for Drew and worked 6 1/3 innings, yielding only two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five. Bell pitched the last two innings for the Rangers.
Vallaro went 2-for-4 to lead the Rangers at the plate.
Â
FDU jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second when Zamrock bunted in a run. But Thoroughman settled in to blank the Devils from the third through the sixth innings before running into trouble in the seventh, when Zamrok led off with a single and was bunted to second. Longo followed with an RBI-single to make it 2-0, and Bell was then summoned out of the bullpen. But that's when Donofrio helped prevent further damage when he threw out Longo attempting to steal second before Bell got the final out, setting up the late drama.
Â
The Rangers are back in action next Saturday, when they visit William Paterson University for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
