AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Senior
Brandon Kobryn recorded his 100th strikeout in the opener and the Drew University baseball team earned a sweep over Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday, winning its fourth straight game and improving to 4-1 on its spring break trip to Florida.
Â
The Rangers (5-3) captured Game One 9-0 and prevailed 9-7 in the nightcap.
Â
Making his first start of the season, Kobryn (1-0) tossed four shutout innings to earn the win, yielding just two hits while striking out six. His fifth punchout of the game marked the 100th of his career, as he became the first Ranger to hit the century mark since Pete Violante C'20 in 2019.
Â
For the day, freshman
Anthony Tetto enjoyed a big day at the plate, finishing 3-for-7 with a double, a triple, and four runs scored. In addition, sophomore
Frank Master went 3-for-5 with three walks and a pair of runs.
Â
It was a tight game in the early going of the opener, but the Rangers scratched out a run in the first. Master led off the game with a bunt single and was bunted to second by senior
Nick Bisaccia before scoring on an error.
Â
It remained a 1-0 game through five innings of play, thanks in large part to Kobryn's stellar outing. After retiring the first seven batters he faced, he worked out of trouble in the third and the fourth. He induced an inning-ending groundout with two runners on in the third, then coaxed a bases-loaded flyout to escape the fourth.
Â
Drew broke through with a seven-run, four-hit sixth, which included a two-run single from freshman
Trevor Kirkby and an RBI-single from Master. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Â
Master finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored in the opener.
Â
The second game was more of a back-and-forth affair and featured three lead changes. The Bobcats scored two in the top of the first before the Rangers answered with one in the bottom half on an RBI-single from freshman
Matteo Gruendig.
Â
Drew tacked on three more in the fifth to assume a 4-2 lead. Gruendig bunted home a run before freshman
Jordan Delude ripped an RBI-single to put the Rangers on top. Later in the inning, Delude scored on a double steal to put the Blue and Green up two.
Â
Pitt reclaimed the lead with a three-run fifth, but Drew responded with four in the bottom half to go up 8-5. The Rangers were the beneficiaries of four Bobcat errors in the inning, and they tacked on an insurance run in the sixth.
Â
The Bobcats rallied in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and second following a single and hit batsman. A two-run error and an RBI-single made it 9-7, but that's when sophomore
Matthew Nicholson came on to strike out a pair of batters to earn his first collegiate save.
Â
Freshman
Mikey Sica made his first collegiate start and worked 4 1/3 innings, yielding just two earned runs in a no-decision. Junior
Aidan Bauer came on to earn the victory in relief, firing 1 2/3 innings while allowing just one hit and no runs. Sophomore
Breckyn DeAngelis pitches one-third of an inning before Nicholson slammed the door.
Â
Tetto finished the game 2-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored while Delude went 2-for-3.
Â
The Rangers conclude their southern swing on Thursday, when they take on Utica College at 10 a.m. in a single game.
