NAPLES, Fla. – Sophomore
Gabby Duran fired the sixth no-hitter in program history, leading the Drew University softball team to a 5-0 victory over Crown College on Friday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic and the final day of the Rangers' spring break trip to Florida.
Â
Duran struck out five and allowed just three baserunners while tossing the first no-hitter by a Ranger since Laura D'Ornellas C'15 worked a five-inning no-hitter versus Delaware Valley in 2015. In addition, it was the first seven-inning no-no since Kristin Valle C'07 achieved the feat at DeSales in 2006.
Duran joined her head coach,
Erica Mehalick C'03, as one of only five Rangers to throw a no-hitter. Mehalick threw the first two in team history, including a five-inning perfect game against Delaware Valley in 2001 and a six-inning no-hitter versus Lycoming in 2002. Alison Robbins C'05 also twirled a seven-inning no-hitter against DeSales in 2004.
Â
The Rangers (7-3) opened the day with a 3-2 loss to Westfield State College.
Â
After a three-up, three-down first inning, Duran (2-0) faced her biggest challenge in the top of the second inning. The first two batters reached base via a hit batter and walk, but Duran escaped by inducing a pop-out and flyout followed by her first strikeout of the game.
Â
The final three outs in the second started a string of 11 consecutive batters retired by Duran. She issued a two-out walk in the fifth, but coaxed a pop-up to the catcher for the final out.
Â
Duran was on cruise control the rest of the way and sat down the final six Polars she faced. For the game, she tossed 78 pitches while recording 11 flyouts and five groundouts.
Â
At the plate, Drew supplied Duran with all the run support she would need when the Rangers pushed across a pair of runs on an error in the bottom of the first.
Â
The Rangers padded their lead with a three-run fifth, which included an RBI-single from freshman
Lorelei Lorentzen, who finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Freshman
Izzy Wiemer went 2-for-3 while senior
Haley Meierhofer added a 2-for-4 showing at the plate.
Â
In its first game of the Day, Westfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead just three innings into the game. The Owls blasted a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first before pushing across two more with a four-hit third.
Â
The Rangers smacked eight hits for the game, including seven in the first six innings, before putting up a rally in the top of the seventh. Meierhofer led off with a walk, and sophomore pinch-runner
Megan Williams was bunted to second by freshman
Sloan Walmsley. After Williams stole third, Lorentzen walked. Williams and Lorentzen then executed a double steal to make it 3-1. Duran followed up with an RBI-single, but she was caught stealing and the game ended on a lineout to center.
Â
Meierhofer, Duran, and junior
Natalie Lorenzo drilled two hits each for Drew against Westfield. Junior
Allie Porbansky (1-1) pitched all six innings for the Rangers and scattered nine hits. She struck out one and did not walk a batter.
Â
The Rangers play their home opener on Thursday, when they take on Kean University in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
