Kean Takes a Pair from Softball in Home Opener

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University softball team took on Kean University in its home opener and came up on the short of a pair of decisions, as the Cougars won the opener 3-1 before capturing the second game 4-1 on Thursday at the Drew Softball Complex.

In the opener, junior Allie Porbansky shut out Kean for the first four innings. The Rangers (7-5) broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth, when freshman Izzy Wiemer doubled in senior Olivia Magliacano.

The Cougars (8-8) answered with three runs on six hits in the top of the fifth, then tacked on a final run in the sixth.

Porbansky (1-2) tossed five innings in the opener before sophomore Olivia Datilio came on to fire a pair of scoreless frames. Wiemer finished 2-for-3 at the plate in game one.

In the second game, Kean pushed across two runs on four hits in the top of the first. Junior Kaitlynne Streets went on to blank the Cougars over the next three innings before the visitors scored single runs in the fifth and the seventh.

The Rangers made it a 3-1 game in the sixth, when junior Karly Severinsen reached on an infield single, was bunted to second by junior Natalie Lorenzo, stole third, and scored on a single from senior Amanda Novak.

Streets (1-2) worked a complete game in the nightcap, striking out four.

The Rangers are back in action on Saturday, when they visit Elizabethtown College in their Landmark Conference opener starting at 1 p.m.
