ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore
Gabby Duran and junior
Allie Porbansky each tossed a shutout and the Drew University softball team earned a sweep at Elizabethtown College in its Landmark Conference opener on Saturday.
The Rangers (9-5, 2-0 LC) won the opener 4-0 behind a five-hitter from Duran before capturing the second game 2-0 on a nine-hitter from Porbansky and a two-run single from senior
Haley Meierhofer in the fifth inning.
Senior
Olivia Magliacano enjoyed a big day at the plate for Drew, finishing 4-for-6 with a home run, three doubles, and three RBIs.
In the opener, a pair of home runs accounted for all of Drew's runs. Meierhofer went deep with a solo shot in the third, marking her first career homer. Magliacano added a three-run blast in the sixth that set the final score.
It was more than enough offense for Duran (3-0), who fired her second straight shutout and extended her scoreless inning streak to 17. After the Blue Jays singled leading off the bottom of the first, she retired six straight before running into a bases-loaded jam in the third. But she induced back-to-back fly-ball outs to end the inning.
Duran stranded two more runners in the fourth, then allowed just one baserunner over the last three innings. She retired 11 of the last 12 batters she faced and finished with five strikeouts and two walks.
Meierhofer, Magliacano, freshman
Sloan Walmsley, and first-year
Izzy Wiemer all drilled two hits in the opener for Drew.
The second game was scoreless through the opening four innings before Meierhofer's big hit. Junior
Karly Severinsen led off with a single, but was bunted to second by classmate
Natalie Lorenzo bunted her to second. Sophomore
Megan Williams followed up with a single before Meierhofer cleared the bases with her single down the leftfield line.
Meanwhile, Porbansky (2-2) escaped from a jam in the third, getting a strikeout with runners on the corners. She also stranded two baserunners in the fifth and finished with a career-high seven strikeouts without walking a batter.
Williams finished 3-for-3 at the plate in the second game while Magliacano went 2-for-3 with a double.
Drew returns to play with six straight home games, starting with a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday versus TCNJ starting at 2 p.m.
