Game-Opening Run Lifts Women’s Lax at Russell Sage

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Drew University women's lacrosse team outscored Russell Sage College 7-0 to start the game and the Rangers earned a 15-5 non-conference road victory on Saturday.
 
Seven different Rangers scored a goal for the Rangers (4-2), including senior Aubrey Welch, who posted five goals and four draw controls. Junior Grace Patane added two goals and two assists while classmate Madi Strong contributed two goals and one helper. Sophomore Kristina Lowe contributed two goals, three ground balls, three caused turnovers, and three draw controls, and senior Emma Gallaro also scored two goals. Sophomore Hayden Scotti handed out three assists.
 
At the defensive end, junior Madina Sarwari posted three caused turnovers while freshman Annie Durante made five saves over 30 minutes of play.
 
Gianna Geraci scored three goals to lead the Gators (0-2).
 
Drew's entire 7-0 run occurred during the first quarter. Strong scored twice during the stretch while Gallaro capped the outburst with both of her goals. Sage ended the run when Geraci scored with 27 seconds left in the period.
 
Neither side scored again until Geraci struck with 7:22 left in the first half. But Welch gave the Rangers a spark heading into halftime, scoring twice inside the final three and a half minutes to give her team a 9-2 lead at the break.
 
The two sides traded goals twice in the third quarter, with Patane and freshman Regina Williams scoring for Drew, and the Rangers led 11-4 heading into the final period.
 
Sage scored with 8:45 remaining, but the Rangers iced the victory with four goals in the final six minutes, including two more from Welch.
 
Drew plays its Landmark Conference opener on Saturday, when it hosts Lycoming College at noon.
