Baseball Slugs Six Homers, Sweeps Elizabethtown

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University baseball team blasted six home runs and the Rangers slugged their way to a Landmark Conference sweep of Elizabethtown College on Saturday at Doc Young Field at Lonnstrom Stadium.

The Rangers (11-4, 4-1 LC), who smacked a total of 14 extra-base hits on the day, won the opener 14-3 in seven innings before rallying with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to capture the second game 8-7.

A number of players turned in big performances at the plate for Drew, which defeated the Blue Jays in a season series for the first time since winning two of three at Elizabethtown in 2015. Freshman Anthony Tetto went 4-for-6 with a home run, two doubles, and three RBIs while sophomore Dylan Gallagher finished 3-for-5 with two homers, four runs, and three RBIs. Junior Tyler Giordano also went yard twice and went 3-for-6 with four RBIs on the day.

Sophomore Frank Master finished 4-for-8 and drilled the go-ahead single in the second game while classmate Anthony Vallaro was 3-for-4 with three doubles in the first game. In addition, sophomore Zach Maxwell went 3-for-8 with a pair of doubles.

On the mound, junior Tyler Bell worked 5 1/3 innings in the opener, allowing just two hits while striking out a career-high seven to pick up the win.

Drew scored a run in each of the six innings it batted in the first game. After Bell worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first, the Rangers wasted little time displaying their offensive might, scoring four times in the bottom half, when freshman Nick Donofrio slammed his team-leading fourth home run, a two-run blast to centerfield.

After the Blue Jays (10-4, 4-2 LC) put a run on the board in the second, Giordano clubbed his first long ball of the day leading off the bottom of the inning. The Rangers added three runs in the third, one in the fourth, and three more in the fifth, when Gallagher and Tetto clouted one solo homer each before a two-run single by senior Nick Bisaccia to make it 12-1.

Elizabethtown hit two homers of its own in the sixth, but Drew answered with two more in the bottom half to push its lead back over 10, allowing the game to end after the top of the seventh due to the Landmark Conference's 10-run mercy rule.

In addition to his three doubles, Vallaro scored three runs in the opener while Tetto finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Master went 2-for-4 with two runs.

Other than the Rangers' continued power surge, the second game followed a different script, as Drew did not lead until scoring its final run of the day. Elizabethtown led 3-0 and 4-1 early versus freshman starter Nicholas Lo Vacco before the Rangers went to the long ball once again in the bottom of the sixth. Gallagher launched a two-run homer before Giordano drilled a solo shot to pull the Rangers even.

The Blue Jays answered with three runs over the next two innings against a pair of relievers to go up 7-4, but Drew still had plenty of offense left in the tank. Batting against reliever Paul Kvech, the Rangers started the inning with a double from Tetto and a single from Gallagher before freshman Matteo Gruendig singled home Tetto to make it 7-5. Corey Rible was then summoned out of the pen for Etown, and after a wild pitch put runners on second and third, Giordano pushed a two-run single just past the second baseman, scoring Gruendig and pinch-runner Jack Mocik to pull the Rangers even.

Sophomore Kevin Burgess ran for Giordano and came through with a big stolen base. Master then drilled what held up as the game-winning single through the right side for Drew's fifth straight hit to start the inning.

Junior Graham Ross pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save of the year.

Giordano finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the second game while Master, Maxwell, Tetto, and Gallagher all contributed two hits apiece.

Lo Vacco worked his longest outing of the season, tossing six innings while yielding four runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks while striking out five. Freshman Mikey Sica pitched 1 2/3 innings before junior Aidan Bauer (2-0) got the final out in the top of the eighth to pick up the win.

The two sides complete the three-game series on Sunday with a single game starting at noon.
