Softball Sweeps Wilkes, Improves to 4-0 in Landmark Play

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University softball team capped a six-game homestand in style, sweeping Wilkes University in a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Sunday at the Drew Softball Complex.

Drew won the opener 4-2 before capturing the second game 2-1.

With the sweep, the Rangers (14-6, 4-0 LC) pushed their winning streak to five while posting their second straight Landmark Conference sweep to start the season.

Sophomore Gabby Duran and junior Kaitlynne Streets combined on a nine-hitter in Game One before junior Allie Porbansky tossed a seven-hit complete game in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Colonels (9-5, 1-3 LC) led 2-0 in the fourth inning while Mia Butka threw four perfect innings to start the game. However, the Rangers broke through with three runs on four hits in the fifth.

Freshman Izzy Wiemer started the inning with a single before senior Olivia Magliacano followed up with a double to put runners on second and third. Freshman Lorelei Lorentzen then cleared the bases with a double down the leftfield line to make it a 2-2 game. She was bunted to third by junior Karly Severinsen before sophomore Megan Williams doubled her home with what held up as the game-winning RBI.

Drew tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, when senior Aurora Marino led off with a single and pinch-runner r eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Magliacano.

Meanwhile, Duran scattered seven hits over the first five innings. Wilkes scored once in the second, but Duran avoided further damage when she worked out of a bases-loaded jam. Butka added a solo homer in the second, and she left the game after allowing a double and a walk to open the sixth. But that's when Streets came on to get three outs, including a flyout with the bases loaded.

Wilkes threatened again in the seventh, putting runners on the corners with two outs, but Streets struck out the final batter of the game to nail down her first save of the season and the fourth of her career. She allowed just two hits and one walk.

Duran (4-0) struck out three and walked one.

In the second game, the Colonels pushed across a run off Porbansky in the third to go up 1-0. But the Rangers went in front on one swing of the bat in the bottom half. Junior Natalie Lorenzo roped a one-out single, and in the following at-bat senior Haley Meierhofer blasted a double that reached the fence in left-center. On the relay throw to the plate, the ball bounced out of the catcher's glove and rolled near the home dugout, allowing Meierhofer to come all the way around to score, putting the Rangers up 2-1.

Porbansky (4-2) made the lead stand up, firing four scoreless innings the rest of the way. She stranded runners on first and second in each of the last two innings en route to her fifth complete game of the season. For the game, she struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Magliacano finished 2-for-3 in the second game.

The Rangers are back in action on Wednesday, when they visit Centenary University in a non-conference twinbill starting at 3 p.m.
