Early Run Lifts Etown Versus Men’s Lacrosse

MADISON, N.J. – Senior Riley Zeer posted five goals and two assists, but Elizabethtown College handed the Drew University men's lacrosse team a 19-10 setback in a Landmark Conference affair Wednesday evening at a sweltering Ranger Stadium.

The Blue Jays (6-9, 5-2 LC) used a 6-0 run overlapping the first and second quarters to go up by five, and they would lead by at least four the rest of the way.

Graduate student Joost van der Horst added three goals and one assist for the Rangers (6-7, 3-4 LC) while sophomore Nick Carabetta contributed one goal, one assist, and three ground balls.

Freshman Josef Zengerle recorded three caused turnovers while senior Salvatore Desiderio and junior Eli Sanford picked up three ground balls each.

In goal, senior Sawyer Kennedy turned aside 12 shots. At the faceoff X, junior Gabriel Gutierrez went 15-for-31 on faceoffs.

Tristan Coleman posted four goals and three assists for Etown while Reese Levinson also scored three goals.

Van der Horst, Nick Carabetta, and sophomore Joseph Carabetta scored three straight goals in the first quarter to put the Rangers up 3-2 with 4:17 left in the opening quarter. But that's when the Blue Jays went on their run to assume an 8-3 lead with 12:22 left in the first half. The two sides traded goals twice over the remainder of the quarter, with Zeer striking twice for Drew, and it was a 10-5 game at the intermission.

The visitors held a 4-3 edge in the third quarter, when Zeer scored twice and van der Horst connected once, and the Blue Jays led 14-8 heading into the final stanza.

Elizabethtown pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Rangers 5-2. Van der Horst and Zeer scored one goal apiece in the period.

The Rangers play their final home game of the season on Saturday, when they take on Juniata College at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
