Stevens Takes a Pair from Softball

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Drew University softball team lost a pair of games at Stevens Institute of Technology in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday.

The Ducks (20-12) won the opener 7-3, then captured a 3-1 decision in the second game.

In the first game, Stevens jumped to a 6-0 lead after three innings of play. The Rangers (20-14) rallied with in the sixth inning, scoring three times on three hits and one error. Junior Kaitlynne Streets led off with a single before senior Olivia Magliacano blasted a two-run homer – her team-leading third long ball of the season – to make it a 6-2 game.

Freshman Sloan Walmsley followed up with a walk, stole second, and moved to third on a ground ball before scoring on a single from freshman Izzy Wiemer to cut the deficit in half.

Stevens answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to set the final score.

Streets finished 2-for-2 in the opener. In the circle for Drew, sophomore Gabby Duran pitched the first 2 2/3 innings before Streets tossed the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on five hits.

The Ducks scored early in the second game as well, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first versus junior starter Allie Porbansky. The Rangers tied it up in the top of the third, when junior Natalie Lorenzo led off with a double, was bunted to second by sophomore Megan Williams, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Magliacano.

Stevens responded with single runs in the third and fourth, setting the final score.

Porbansky shut out the Ducks over the last two innings and finished with a six-inning complete game. She allowed just two earned runs and struck out three batters. Walmsley finished the game with a pair of hits.

The Rangers are back in action on Saturday, when they host the University of Scranton in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
