SCRANTON, Pa. – Freshman
Nick Donofrio broke the single-season school record for home runs, going deep three times to help lead the Drew University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep at the University of Scranton in Landmark Conference play on Saturday.
Â
The Rangers (19-14, 9-10 LC) won the opener 17-11 before capturing the second game 6-4.
Â
Donofrio smacked a two-run homer in the opener and a pair of three-run shots in the second game, pushing his season total to nine – one more than the previous record set by Brian Gable in 1997 and Nate Miller in 2024. In addition, his first homer of the day broke the team record for dingers in a season, as the Rangers surpassed the former mark of 23 set by the 2019 squad.
Â
Donofrio finished 4-for-7 with 11 RBIs on the day while sophomore
Frank Master went 5-for-8 with four runs scored. Sophomore
Anthony Vallaro went 4-for-9 with three doubles for the afternoon.
Â
The Rangers racked up a season-high 20 hits in the opener, the most by the Rangers since a 10-9 victory at William Paterson on March 1 of last season.
Â
Drew raced out to a 9-0 lead in the first game, capped by Donfrio's long ball in the sixth. He drove in his fifth and final run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh to give Drew an 11-2 lead, but the two sides combined for 15 runs over the last inning and a half.
Â
Scranton (22-13, 11-8 LC) cut the lead to 11-6 following a four-run eighth before the Rangers put up six in the top of the ninth, which included a three-run double from Vallaro, to push their lead to 17-6. The Royals scored five in the bottom half to set the final score.
Â
Donofrio finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs in the first game while Master went 4-for-5. Vallaro went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs while junior
Griffin Shenman finished 3-for-6 with a double and three runs scored. In addition, senior
Nick Bisaccia went 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs, and sophomore
Dylan Gallagher and freshman
Jordan Delude drilled two hits each.
Â
Freshman
Jayce Thoroughman (3-2) pitched six innings to earn the victory on the mound in the opener for Drew, as he struck out four.
Â
In the second game, Donofrio drove in all of Drew's runs with homers in the first and and fifth innings, spotting junior starter
Tyler Bell a 6-0 lead. Bell made the lead stand up, allowing only three unearned runs on five hits and four walks through six innings. Sophomore
Nick Garbooshian pitched the final three innings and yielded just one run to earn his first career save.
Â
Donofrio's six RBIs placed him in a tie for fifth-most in one game at Drew. He finished 2-for-3 while sophomore
Zach Maxwell went 2-for-4.
Â
The two teams conclude their series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
