Baseball Rips 17 Hits, But Scranton Rallies Late in Series Finale

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Drew University baseball team capped a big offensive weekend with 17 hits, but host University of Scranton rallied with eight runs in the bottom of the eight to capture a Landmark Conference series finale, 12-10, on Sunday.
 
The Rangers (19-15, 9-11 LC), who batted .370 slugged .513 for the series, led 8-0 through 4 1/2 innings before the Royals (23-12, 12-7 LC) came back to score all of their runs over four innings.
 
Junior Tyler Giordano finished 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for Drew while sophomore Frank Master batted 4-for-6 to finish the series 9-for-14. Junior Zach Maxwell, sophomore Dylan Gallagher, and sophomore Anthony Vallaro collected two hits each.
 
The Rangers scored once in the first on an RBI-single from Gallagher before pushing across three runs in the third, which included run-scoring singles from Gallagher and Giordano, making it 4-0.
 
Drew scored again in the fourth before a three-run fifth gave the visitors their eight-run advantage. Juniors Aiden Mitchell and Griffin Shenman singled in one run apiece in the inning.
 
Scranton cut the lead in half (8-4) with four runs in the bottom of the fifth before the Rangers went up 10-4. Giordano knocked in each of Drew's last two runs.
 
The Royals used six hits, three walks, and one hit batter to pull together its big inning.
 
Freshman Nicholas Lo Vacco started and pitched four innings, allowing just two runs, before exiting the game.
 
The Rangers continue their season on Wednesday, when they host Moravian University at 3:30 p.m. in a Landmark Conference affair.
